PASSWORD-MANAGER PRICING
Compare the price you will renew at—not only the offer you see today.
A low first-year price is not a useful comparison until you know the billing period, people included, feature limit, and renewal amount you would actually accept.
START WITH THE SETUP
Use the same comparison sheet for every plan
- 01
Record the plan name, billing currency, billing period, and regular renewal price.
- 02
Count the people who need separate accounts; family and team limits are often account limits, not device limits.
- 03
Write down the one capability that would make you upgrade: sharing, aliases, recovery, extra seats, or another documented requirement.
- 04
Keep trial dates and promotional end dates separate from the regular price.
WORK THROUGH THE CHANGE
Compare the same people, features, and period
- 1
Compare monthly and annual billing only for the same plan and currency.
- 2
Check whether the feature you need is included at renewal, rather than assuming it is part of the entry tier.
- 3
Open the official checkout before you buy; taxes, currency, and regional pricing can change the final amount.
- 4
Include the cost of moving later if an entry plan will no longer suit the people who need access.
- 5
Set a calendar reminder before the trial or promotion changes to a paid renewal.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
The cheaper first year can cost more over two years
Hypothetical USD prices before tax—not quotes from any vendor. Assume both plans cover the same people and features, and these prices stay unchanged for two years.
- Plan A: $24, then $72
- You pay $24 for year one and $72 at renewal: $96 over two years, or $4 per month averaged across 24 months.
- Plan B: $42 each year
- You pay $84 over two years, or $3.50 per month averaged across 24 months. That is $12 less overall, despite the higher first payment.
- What to write down
- Record the amount charged now, the renewal amount and date, people included, and required features. A monthly equivalent does not mean you can pay monthly.
COMPARE YOUR QUOTES
Which plan costs less over two years?
Enter the full annual charge, not the advertised monthly equivalent. Use plans that cover the same people and features.
This adds one 12-month first payment and one 12-month renewal. It does not handle monthly billing, multi-year deals, or later price changes. Include taxes in both quotes, or leave them out of both.
Example amounts only—not vendor prices. Replace all four amounts with your quotes.
- Plan A · two years
- USD 96.00
- USD 4.00 / month equivalent
- Plan B · two years
- USD 84.00
- USD 3.50 / month equivalent
Plan B costs USD 12.00 less over two years with these amounts.
A monthly equivalent is not a monthly payment option. Lower cost does not mean a plan meets your requirements. Check the provider’s checkout before paying.
Current prices, provider by provider
Each page lists the plans, billing basis, first-year offers where they are published, and what to check at checkout: 1Password pricing, Bitwarden pricing, NordPass pricing, and Proton Pass pricing.
A GOOD REASON TO WAIT
A price comparison is incomplete if
- It compares a promotional price with another product’s regular renewal price.
- It treats a family plan as interchangeable with a personal plan without counting people.
- It recommends a paid tier before naming the requirement that the free tier cannot meet.
When to use the provider’s instructions
This is a planning guide, not security, legal, or account-recovery advice. Use the provider’s current documentation and your organisation’s policy where they apply.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Put real plans beside your comparison sheet.
Start with a documented comparison, then verify the current amount at the provider. Keep your required features and household size the same on both sides.
