Bitwarden vs Proton Pass: free plans, family prices, and email aliases

Both have a free plan that works on unlimited devices. The differences are in how you share, whether you want email aliases built in, and what a paid year costs: Bitwarden Premium is $19.80 a year and Proton Pass Plus is $35.88. Decide which of those matters to you, then try both.

What the choice depends on

  • How many people share logins. Bitwarden Free shares with one other person; Proton Pass Free shares each of its 2 vaults with up to 2 others. Both family plans cover six accounts.
  • Whether you want email aliases built in (Proton Pass) or through a forwarding service you connect to Bitwarden.
  • Your budget for one person: $19.80 a year for Bitwarden Premium, $35.88 for Pass Plus on annual billing.

A household of six: price and aliases side by side

At the listed annual prices, Proton Pass Family costs $12 more a year than Bitwarden Families ($59.88 − $47.88), and both cover six accounts. Proton’s price includes unlimited hide-my-email aliases. With Bitwarden, aliases come from a separate forwarding service, which may have its own price, so add that before comparing totals if your household will use aliases. This is a price calculation, not a verdict about which app your household will find easier.

Try this before a full import

  1. Share one low-risk test login with another person and check what they can see and change.
  2. If aliases matter, create one for a low-risk sign-up, reply from it, then disable it.
  3. Save a passkey for a test account and check it signs you in on each device you use every day.
  4. Import a small export first, compare the item counts, and write down the renewal price before the trial or first year ends.

Use a non-sensitive test login before moving your full vault.
