1Password vs Proton Pass: family plan costs, sharing, and email aliases

Proton Pass has a free plan; 1Password starts with a 14-day trial. For a household, the deciding numbers are the account limit (5 for 1Password Families, 6 for Pass Family) and the price from the second year, when 1Password’s first-year offer ends.

What the choice depends on

  • Household size. Up to five people fits either family plan; a sixth person fits Pass Family’s listed limit but not the 5 members 1Password lists.
  • Whether you want to start free. Only Proton Pass has a free plan.
  • How you want email aliases: built into Proton Pass, or through a Fastmail account connected to 1Password.
  • Which year you compare. 1Password’s first-year offer is lower than Pass Family’s listed price; its regular rate is higher.

A five-person household: compare the second year

Both family plans cover five people. In the first year, 1Password Families at its advertised offer costs $6 less than Proton Pass Family ($59.88 − $53.88). From the second year, at 1Password’s listed regular rate, it costs $12 more ($71.88 − $59.88). Over two years that is $125.76 for 1Password and $119.76 for Proton Pass, if Proton’s price stays the same at renewal, which its page does not confirm. This is a price calculation, not a verdict about which app your household will find easier.

Try this before a full import

  1. Count everyone who needs their own account, including the organiser.
  2. Share one test login with another household member and check they can use it on their own device.
  3. If aliases matter, create one for a low-risk sign-up. With 1Password, that means setting up Fastmail first.
  4. Write down the renewal total for both plans before the trial or first year ends.

Use a non-sensitive test login before moving your full vault.
