iPhone stops charging at 80%? It may be doing its job.

First, read the message
Open the Lock Screen and look for a charging notification. Then open Settings → Battery. Match what you see below before changing anything.
| What you see | Start here |
|---|---|
| A limit below 100% on iPhone 15 or later | Check the chosen limit |
| A notification with a time for charging to finish | Bring the finish time forward |
| A message saying charging will resume at a normal temperature | Check temperature |
| No explanation, or charging fails at other percentages too | Check the charging connection |
Check the chosen limit
On iPhone 15 or later, open Settings → Battery → Charging. A limit below 100% is an intentional stopping point, not proof of a broken charger.
Need a full battery? Set the limit to 100%. Check the next section if it pauses again. Note your previous limit for later.
An occasional charge to 100% with a lower limit selected helps maintain accurate charge estimates. Apple explains the exception.
Bring the finish time forward
Optimized Battery Charging can wait at 80% and finish later. Press and hold its notification, then choose Charge Now to finish sooner.
On iPhone 14 or earlier, its setting is under Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Turning charging optimizations off can increase battery wear. Try the notification override before making a permanent change. Apple’s charging-options guide.
Let the phone return to a normal temperature
A temperature-related Charging On Hold message means the phone is too hot or too cold to charge. Raising the charge limit does not address that cause.
If a temperature warning screen appears, turn the phone off, move it somewhere cooler and out of direct sunlight, and allow it to cool. Apple’s temperature guidance.
Heat can also limit charging above 80% without a charger fault. Move the phone and charger to a cooler location. Charging should resume as the temperature drops. Apple’s troubleshooting advice.
Check the charging connection
If the phone is at a normal temperature and neither charging setting explains the stop, investigate the connection next. Start with equipment you already have, not a shopping basket.
- Check the cable and adapter for damage. Do not use damaged accessories.
- Check that connections are firm and try another wall outlet.
- Restart the phone and try charging again.
If it still will not charge, use Apple’s model-specific charging checklist and service guidance. Note the percentage where it stops and the exact alert, if any. That gives support more to work with than “the charger is broken.”
Slow above 80% is not the same as stuck
A percentage that continues rising slowly is a different symptom from a repeated stop. iPhone reduces charging current as it approaches full charge to manage heat. Do not judge the final portion by how quickly the first portion charged. Apple explains charging and battery temperature.
The useful question is not “How do I force 100%?” It is “What is stopping this charge?” Check the message, then the setting, then the connection.
