iPhone hotspot connected, but no internet on your laptop?

Check the phone before the laptop

Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s mobile data connection, not its connection to a nearby Wi-Fi router. Apple explains how hotspot connections work.

On the iPhone, switch Wi-Fi off in Settings and open two different websites in Safari. Use pages you haven’t already loaded. This is a diagnostic comparison: if neither loads, the laptop’s Wi-Fi settings are not the first thing to change.

Check mobile reception and whether mobile data is available on your plan. If you’re travelling, check roaming charges before enabling roaming. Don’t buy a new adapter to solve a connection the phone itself cannot provide.

The phone works: check who else can connect

If available, connect a second device to the hotspot and try those websites. Make sure that device isn’t quietly using its own mobile data instead.

  • Both devices fail: investigate the iPhone’s hotspot setup and ask your carrier whether tethering is supported on your plan.
  • Only the laptop fails: concentrate on its saved Wi-Fi connection and network diagnostics.
  • Websites load, but one app fails: investigate that app rather than resetting both devices.

These results narrow the search; they don’t prove which component is faulty.

Reconnect once, with the right password

On the iPhone, open Settings → Personal Hotspot (sometimes under Cellular) and enable Allow Others to Join. Keep that screen open while reconnecting. Use the password shown there, not your Apple Account password.

On Windows 11, go to Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks. Select only the iPhone’s network, choose Forget, then reconnect with its hotspot password. Have that password available before forgetting it. Microsoft documents the reconnect steps and Windows diagnostics.

Save your work before restarting either device. Check for software updates when you have a working connection.

If the Wi-Fi connection itself fails

On iPhone 12 or later, Maximize Compatibility in Personal Hotspot settings is an option to try. It can reduce internet performance and Wi-Fi security. Note the original setting and restore it if it doesn’t help. This is a compatibility test, not a general speed boost. Apple’s hotspot troubleshooting guidance.

For a Windows laptop that still cannot browse, run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. On a work-managed computer, ask IT before altering VPN, proxy, or security settings.

Need a temporary connection? Try USB

Use your own trusted computer and a suitable USB cable. Windows needs the current Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows installed. Enable the hotspot, connect the phone, and approve the computer trust prompt only if it’s your computer. Follow Apple’s USB hotspot instructions.

If USB works while hotspot Wi-Fi fails, that gives you a workaround and points toward the wireless connection for further investigation. It doesn’t establish that the laptop needs replacing. Mobile-data charges still apply; switch the hotspot off when finished.

Leave resets until you understand the trade-off

An iPhone network reset clears saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords along with cellular, VPN, and APN settings. Windows network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters; VPN software may need setting up again. Neither is a harmless first click.

If the earlier checks don’t help, give your carrier or support team three observations: whether the phone can browse on mobile data, whether another hotspot device works, and whether USB works. That is more useful than “I’ve reset everything.”
