AirDrop stuck on Waiting? Check the receiving device first.

Start with one file and both screens
Try one ordinary photo while both people watch their screens. Note the last thing that happens. This gives you a more useful clue than repeatedly resending an entire album.
| What you see | Start here |
|---|---|
| The receiving person never appears | Check visibility |
| Their name appears, but the transfer waits | Check the receiving prompt |
| The transfer finishes, but the file is missing | Check where it arrived |
The person does not appear
Keep the devices nearby, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on for both. Disconnect Personal Hotspot if either device is using it. That can interrupt internet access for connected devices, so finish anything important first.
On the receiving iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, hold the connectivity controls, then tap AirDrop. With the recipient’s agreement, try Everyone for 10 Minutes for this transfer. Apple’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
If Contacts Only was the obstacle, check the recipient’s contact card for you. It needs the email address or phone number associated with your Apple Account. Apple’s AirDrop guide.
The person appears but it keeps waiting
Ask the recipient to look for Accept. When both devices use iOS 26.2 or later, sharing between people outside each other’s contacts can instead require an AirDrop code. The recipient selects Get AirDrop Code and gives that code to the sender to enter when prompted. Do not substitute an Apple Account password or a sign-in verification code. Apple explains the receiving steps.
Sending to a Mac? If its Finder AirDrop window is open, the acceptance prompt appears there instead of Notification Center. Check that window before retrying. Transfers between your own devices using the same Apple Account accept automatically, so a missing Accept button is not necessarily a fault. Mac receiving instructions.
If the small test still fails, save open work and restart the devices before trying again. Record which device sees which prompt if you need support. Do not reset network settings or sign out of your account just to repeat this test.
It sent, so where is it?
Check the matching app first: a photo commonly arrives in Photos. Some iPhone and iPad items go to Files. On a Mac, check Downloads or the app/location selected when accepting. A completed transfer with a missing file is a different problem from a transfer still waiting. Apple’s file-location guidance.
Put receiving permissions back
After the test, return to the receiving setting you normally use. On iPhone or iPad, find it under Settings → General → AirDrop. On a Mac, open Finder → AirDrop and check Allow me to be discovered by. Choose limited visibility or turn receiving off when you do not need it. Apple’s AirDrop privacy controls.
