Move Chrome passwords into Bitwarden

  3. Bitwarden

Keep the original Chrome logins until you have checked the new vault.

Keep the export private

A password CSV is a readable file, not an encrypted vault. Anyone who can open it can read its contents. Do not email it, upload it to a converter, or save it in a shared folder. Use your own computer and a private local folder.

Export, import, check

  1. In desktop Chrome, open chrome://password-manager/settings.
  2. Under Export passwords, choose Download file. Complete the computer’s authorization prompt yourself.
  3. Save the CSV somewhere you can find it again.
  4. Sign in to the Bitwarden web app. Choose Tools → Import, then My vault as the destination.
  5. Select the Chrome CSV format, choose your export, and select Import.
  6. Search for a few important logins in Bitwarden. Check their website addresses and usernames, then try signing in using Bitwarden.
  7. After checking the result, delete the exported CSV. Check whether your chosen location also copied it to cloud storage or a backup.

Imported twice?

Bitwarden does not remove duplicate entries during import. Do not repeat a successful import to “make sure.” Review existing entries first.

Next: Check which password manager fits your needs.
